Camino day 1 – St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalle

The day was overcast as we headed away but the sky cleared as we headed up the Pyrenees. We chose to take the more difficult Nepoleon route which climbs to 1,400 metres in a very short distance.

Rest stop on the way up to the top of Pyrenees
A steady stream of Pilgrims reaching Orisson
Orisson for coffee

We had deviated off the track at the recommendation of the casino cycling guide. Some of these were quite difficult, but if we didn’t want the challenge we could have taken the road route

Pyrenees horses
Lunch stop
We thought it would be an easy run down from here
We were wrong……. We took the road less travelled along with other safety conscious Pilgrims
First sight of the Roncesvalles Monastery.

We had been unable to book a bed online but when we arrived we asked if there was any chance of a bed and they gave us the last two.

Accommodation for the night.

Our beds were against the back wall.
Cheers (with a fellow Pilgrim)
